A British agent has been charged with the kidnapping and death of Sarah Everard, who suddenly disappeared without a trace last week. The case has sparked a lot of anger in the UK. There is a debate flared up about violence against women.
48-year-old agent Wayne Couzens will be brought to trial today. It is as yet unknown whether he knew Everard. He was part of a team that protects parliament buildings, embassies and the prime minister’s residence.
A woman was also previously arrested for assisting in the kidnapping, but she has been released on bail.
The 33-year-old victim walked home alone in London in the evening after visiting a friend. She was captured by a video camera near her house, but then disappeared. Days later, a body was found an hour and a half from London. Yesterday, the police determined that it is the disappeared Everard.
Protest and memorial march
A silent march to commemorate Everard’s death has been banned by authorities due to applicable corona regulations. With the march, the organizers also wanted to “reclaim the night” for women. “Women are not the problem,” the activists said.
The organizers say they will look for an alternative way to commemorate the woman in consultation with the police.
