London – British actress Maggie Smith died, she was 89 years old. According to the media, her family and the producer informed about it today. Among other things, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in the film The Best Years of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969. She also received numerous other film awards for her performances. In recent years, she was also known for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the films about the sorcerer’s apprentice Harry Potter or for her role as Violet Crawley in the series Downton Manor. “She died peacefully, early this morning in hospital. She was very private and spent the end of her life with friends and family. She is survived by two sons and five loving grandchildren, all of whom are devastated by the loss of their special mother and grandmother,” said sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
The daughter of an Oxford professor embarked on an acting career somewhat against her parents’ will, but it soon became clear that she had real talent – even if she herself doubted it. At the age of twenty-one, she got an engagement in a musical on Broadway. She collected a total of two Oscars, three Golden Globes and five British Academy BAFTA awards.
She appeared in front of the camera – film and television – for the first time in the mid-1950s. On the screen and in cinemas, the actress with unmistakable eyes has been one of the biggest stars of Anglo-Saxon cinema since the late 1960s, but she hasn’t forgotten about the theater either. At a time when many actors are retiring, she got a role that not only brought her three Emmy awards, but again also worldwide fame. The impressive costume drama Downton Manor, which was filmed between 2010 and 2015, is said to have never been properly watched by herself. She did not give up her acting career long after her 80th birthday, for example, she played in the film sequel Downton Manor (2022) or in the comedy The Miracle Club (2023).
In addition to film awards, she received the Order of the British Empire in 1970, and in 1990 Queen Elizabeth II. she conferred the peerage of Dame, which is equivalent to the knighthood of Sir given to men.
