For his role in the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire”, Holmes was nominated for an Oscar.
Holm had a successful career at the Royal Shakespeare Company and British television. One of his most famous roles in cinema is the hobbit Bilbo Bagins in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”.
“He died peacefully in the hospital in the presence of family members and caregivers,” the family said in a statement.
Holm had Parkinson’s disease.
