British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his roles in the Oscar-winning films Titanic and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, died early this morning at the age of 79. It was reported by the BBC News server with a link to the actor’s agent. The family has not yet issued any official statement.
Hilla became famous for her role as Captain Edward Smith in Titanic, which won eleven Oscars. The Manchester native also played King Théoden in two parts of the fantasy trilogy based on the books by writer JRR Tolkien. The latest installment, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, also won 11 golden statuettes. The only other film to receive the same number of Academy Awards is 1959’s Ben Hur.
On TV, Hill will appear in the second series of the British drama The Responder, which starts broadcasting on the BBC today.
