A cruise ship collided with an oil tanker off the Spanish island of Mallorca after it was torn loose from its mooring in a storm.
On images on social media you can see how around noon on Sunday the thick cables with which the 330-meter long cruise ship is fastened suddenly snap, after which the ship floats away.
As a result of the collision, a number of passengers on board the Britannia suffered minor injuries, the company behind the cruise – P&O Cruises – said in a press statement.
Thousands of British tourists were on board. One of them, Ricky Stubbs, says to the paper The Guardian that he first heard “a loud clap”. Then people ran across the deck in panic. Then, over the intercom, the captain asked the passengers to return to their sleeping quarters.
Another passenger says to the BBC that once unhinged the cruise ship floated through the harbor like a “paper boat”.
The ship will remain docked in the city of Palma for at least one more night, so that the exact damage can be investigated.
