Britain’s Conservatives are naming a new leader

Britain’s Conservatives, badly battered after losing the historic election in July, will announce their new leader on Saturday. A decision will be made between Kemi Baydenach and Robert Jenrick in the race to replace former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the helm of the Tories. Both belong to the right wing of the party.

Baidenach has been a member of parliament for Essex in the south-west of England since 2017 and has represented the party’s right-wing course for years. She was the minister of industry and trade under former Prime Minister Sunak. Jenrick has been an MP since 2014 and resigned as migration minister last year because he felt the then Tory government’s controversial plans to send migrants to Rwanda did not go far enough.

It is difficult for the new leader of the party to get the party back on track. The former ruling party has been led by five different leaders since the Brexit referendum in 2016 and has been dogged by a number of scandals.
