Elaf from Dubai: There is evidence that the new strain of Corona virus, which was first detected in southeast England, carries a higher risk of death than the original strain, according to what the chief scientific adviser to the British government said, Friday, although he stressed that this data is not Confirmed.
According to a report published by “Al Arabiya.net” Saturday, Patrick Vallance said in a press conference that “there is evidence that there is an increased risk for those infected with the new strain,” adding that the increased risk to a 60-year-old man appears to range from one death. Per 1,000 injuries equals about 1.3 or 1.4 per 1,000.
However, he stressed that “the evidence is not strong yet,” and more research is needed. As for what is certain, it is that the new strain is transmitted more easily than the original strain, and according to him, it is more transmissible by between 30 and 70 percent.
Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO Technical Officer for COVID-19, indicated that studies are underway to look at the transmission and severity of the new strain of the virus.
So far, she added, “they have not seen an increase in risk,” but more outbreaks could lead to an “overburdened healthcare system” and thus more deaths.
It is noteworthy that British officials had stressed their confidence that the vaccines that were authorized to be used against Covid-19 would be effective against the new strain that was detected in the country.
But Valance said that scientists are concerned that the strains detected in Brazil and South Africa could be more resistant to vaccines, adding that more research is needed.
Britain has recorded 95,981 deaths among people who have tested positive for the Coronavirus, the highest total confirmed deaths from the virus in Europe.
