London’s Labor mayor Sadiq Khan has accused US President-elect Donald Trump of criticizing him during his first term (2017-2021) because of the “colour of his skin” and his Muslim faith.
Speaking in a podcast broadcast this week but recorded before the November 5 US election, Khan added that he was “speaking out against someone whose policies were sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic and racist”.
The relationship between the two men has always been strained.
In 2019, the US president had said that Khan, the first Muslim mayor of a Western capital, had done a “very bad job on terrorism” and called him a “complete failure”.
For his part, Khan, the son of Pakistani immigrants, had accused Trump of “hard-right populism” before giving his approval for the display of a giant inflatable baby in the likeness of the then US president at a London rally in June 2019. .
On the “High Performance” podcast, he addressed the attacks he was targeted by Donald Trump.
“If I didn’t have that skin color, if I wasn’t Muslim, I wouldn’t be attacked,” he said.
“This affects me, me and my family. But what worries me is not myself and my family. What worries me is that this is the leader of the free world,” he said.
These latest comments from Khan about the newly elected president are at odds with the British Labor Party line. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was quick to congratulate Trump on his “historic election victory”.
The head of government also insisted his phone call with the Republican was “very positive, very constructive” and said the “special” relationship between the UK and the US would “thrive” during Trump’s second term.
