Britain: Two dead from separate attacks at the Notting Hill carnival – 2024-09-01 00:18:21

British police today announced the death of two people in attacks during the famous Notting Hill carnival in London, one of the largest in the world, which took place last weekend.

The two victims – a mother who went to the carnival with her young daughter and a chef visiting the UK – were in hospital for just under a week.

Separate attacks

Sir Maxime, 32, was stabbed on Sunday afternoon as she tried to stop a fight. She succumbed to her injuries Saturday morning, police said.

On Wednesday, a 20-year-old man was brought to court on a charge of attempted murder, a charge that will be reviewed after the victim’s death.

Mousei Imnetou, a 41-year-old chef from Dubai who was visiting the UK and had worked for celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Alain Doukas, died on Friday night.

The 41-year-old was found unconscious on Monday night after suffering a head injury in front of a restaurant where many carnival participants were present.

A 31-year-old man was charged on Friday as a suspect in his wounding and his case will also be reviewed following Imnetos’ death, police said.

Organizers of the event expressed their “shock”, as did the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who denounced a “betrayal of carnival values”.

As every year, almost a million people flocked to the streets of this district in the west of the British capital for two days for this famous carnival that has been celebrating Caribbean culture for more than 50 years.

A total of 8 people were stabbed

The carnival is considered the largest in Europe and the second in the world behind that of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

A total of eight people were stabbed – three on Sunday and five on Monday – despite the installation of metal detectors at the entrances to some streets.

At the same time, hundreds of people were arrested during the carnival.

While gun ownership is strictly regulated in the UK, the country is struggling to regulate the possession of bladed weapons, particularly among teenagers.

There have been a number of knife attacks in the UK in recent weeks, with police saying they have found no terrorist motive in any of them.

The fatal stabbing of three girls in Southport almost a month ago sparked riots mainly by far-right anti-immigrants.
