Britain is using its naval expertise to help Ukraine control the Black Sea. This is part of a ten-year security pact due to be signed in the coming weeks, The Daily Telegraph reported.
As noted, the memorandum of understanding will contain a promise to preserve Kyiv’s ability to resist Russia by providing military assistance to Ukraine. It will focus on naval assets, as well as financial assistance and intelligence sharing. The article says that the document will also mention London’s promises to provide security guarantees at the end of the conflict.
The Daily Telegraph notes that a new memorandum should be signed as part of the creation of a new maritime coalition announced last week. According to the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, it should be formed jointly with Norway, and countries wishing to provide naval assistance to Kyiv will be able to enter it.
Security sources refused to tell the newspaper what kind of weapons London plans to transfer to Kyiv as part of this initiative. It is noted that the adviser to the British Prime Minister on national security Tim Barrow and head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andrey Ermak held secret negotiations on this topic in Brussels.
The Daily Telegraph also writes that at the EU summit last week in Brussels, the issue of allocating 20 billion euros over four years for the purchase of weapons for Kyiv was discussed. A source close to the negotiations told the publication that the EU had proposed to Kyiv to “strengthen cooperation between the European and Ukrainian defense industries” to help produce more weapons that meet NATO standards in Ukraine. The EU also promised to extend training programs for Ukrainian military personnel, continue to share intelligence with Kiev, and fund mine clearance efforts once the conflict ends. As the article says, Ukraine in response promised to international partners to carry out reforms, making the military sphere transparent, modernizing the armed forces, and taking measures to combat corruption, enforce laws and in the judicial sphere.
