British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that increased support for Ukraine was essential to put the country in the strongest possible position for peace talks, admitting in the clearest terms that the war in Ukraine could be ended through negotiations. .
Starmer underlined the importance of continued support for Ukraine and warned that a Russian victory there would threaten Europe’s security, stability and prosperity, particularly as it could embolden Russia’s allies.
“We must continue to support Ukraine and do what is necessary to support their self-defense for as long as necessary,” Starmer said in a speech in London’s historic financial district.
“To put Ukraine in the strongest possible negotiating position so that they can secure a just and lasting peace on their terms that guarantees their security, their independence – and the right to choose their own future,” he added the British prime minister.
Starmer’s comments come at a critical time for the war in Ukraine, with Russia advancing at its fastest pace since 2022 and US President-elect Donald Trump, who is deeply wary of US support for Ukraine — pledges to end the war quickly after being sworn in on January 20.
Britain has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters since the war broke out, after Russian forces invaded that country in 2022, and was the first country to supply Ukraine with more sophisticated weapons, including tanks and long-range cruise missiles. .
It is the clearest language Starmer, who was elected prime minister in July, has used on ending the war with Russia with a negotiated settlement, a British government official told Reuters.
In earlier statements, Starmer said the war should end, with Russia leaving Ukraine at its internationally recognized borders.
Trump’s election to the US presidency has increased pressure on Europe to step up its role in arming Kiev if the US, the biggest single donor, cuts aid.
Starmer also noted that it is “vital that all European states move to protect our common future” as “the future of freedom in Europe is decided today”.
“We face a near and present danger with Russia as an unstable and increasingly desperate aggressor on our continent, marshaling all its resources — along with North Korean troops and Iranian missiles — to kill and conquer,” he concluded.
