Nominations for the Conservative leadership have closed and six MPs are vying for the post, following former prime minister Rishi Sunak’s historic defeat in the recent general election.
The party, defeated after 14 years in power, is due to nominate a new leader on November 2, who will automatically become opposition leader and face off weekly in parliament with new Labor prime minister Keir Starmer.
Former International Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch, considered by many to be the front-runner, was the latest to make her candidacy official. In an opinion piece, Badenoch called for a shift towards “conservative values”, accusing her party of “liberal” views on social issues and “left-wing governance”.
Opposing her is former immigration secretary Robert Genrick and former home secretary Priti Patel – both considered close to the party’s right wing.
The leadership is also contested by three candidates considered “centrists”: former British foreign minister (2022-23) James Cleverley, former undersecretary for security Tom Taggedat and Mel Stride, who is close to Rishi Sunak.
Former home secretary Suella Braverman, who comes from the party’s right wing and is popular with the party base, did not run as she believes she does not have enough support from Conservative MPs. She also claims her own party branded her “crazy, evil and dangerous”.
The party’s 121 MPs will vote in two rounds to choose the top two candidates. In October, online voting will take place among party members to elect the new leader. Voting will end on October 31st and the winner will be announced on November 2nd. Until then, Rishi Sunak remains the leader of the party.
