Russia has probably lost about a third of its ground forces in Ukraine, and its offensive in Donbass is “significantly behind schedule”, Britain said today, citing military intelligence, Reuters reported.
“Although initially making little progress, Russia has not made significant territorial gains in the past month, while maintaining consistently high levels of exhaustion,” the British Ministry of Defense said on Twitter.
“At the moment, Russia has probably lost a third of its ground forces, which it deployed in February,” the statement said.
Russia is unlikely to drastically accelerate its offensive action over the next 30 days, the British ministry predicts.
Ukrainian resistance has forced the Russian army to abandon the offensive on the capital Kyiv. Ukrainian forces then succeeded in northeastern Ukraine and pushed Russian forces out of the Kharkiv region, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Although a Ukrainian counter-offensive is under way near the Russian-controlled town of Izyum, the Ukrainian military said today that Russian forces were advancing in other parts of Donbass, where most of the fighting has taken place over the past month.
