This is due to low electricity production from renewable sources and high prices for natural gas, which has a significant position in the British energy mix.

Network operator National Grid ESO has confirmed that it has called on the French energy company EDF to resume electricity to its West Burton A coal-fired power plant. According to the coal operator, it currently covers about three percent of total electricity consumption in Britain.

According to the operator, high prices of natural gas are mainly responsible for the renewal of electricity supplies produced from coal. For this reason, it is advantageous for the operator to involve “dirtier” coal-fired power plants in production.

EDF wants to definitively shut down its West Burton A coal-fired power plant, which began generating electricity in the 1960s next year. ESO’s National Grid then plans to stop buying electricity from coal by 2024 at the latest. In the British energy mix, coal accounted for 25 per cent of the electricity produced five years ago, up from 1.6 per cent last year. However, according to the BBC, due to high natural gas prices, the use of coal in electricity generation could increase.
