Britain: Prime Minister Starmer will stop accepting donations – 2024-09-21 09:21:19

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will not accept any more clothing donations, a Downing Street source said, following criticism that he has received various gifts worth more than £100,000 since 2019.

According to a Sky News investigation, Starmer received gifts worth at least £107,145, more than any other member of parliament, over the past five years. He also received £40,000 worth of football match and concert tickets, as well as clothes and free accommodation.

At the time, Starmer was the leader of the opposition, but he continued to benefit from these gifts after he became prime minister in July.

Most of the gifts, which are legal and have been declared to Parliament, came from Wahid Ali, a multi-millionaire MP who gave him £16,200 worth of ‘work clothes’ and several pairs of glasses.

Downing Street said that in addition to Starmer, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Raines and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves will also stop receiving clothing.

Starmer says he followed all transparency rules and declared the gifts, but the revelations have hurt him politically at a time when his government is making cuts and slashing financial help to pay the energy bills of millions of pensioners.
