Britain: Police on war footing for far-right incidents after murder in Southport – 2024-08-04 00:34:58

Heavy police forces will be on alert across Britain this weekend and mosques are stepping up security in the wake of violence and clashes that erupted after the murder of three children in northwest England on Monday, officials said.

A 17-year-old is accused of murdering the girls in a knife attack at a dance school in the usually quiet seaside town of Southport, a crime that shocked the country.

Violent incidents broke out in Southport, the north-eastern city of Hartlepool, London and other cities in response to false information spreading rapidly on social media that the suspect in the killings was a radical Islamist immigrant.

In an effort to stamp out misinformation, police announced that suspect Axel Rudakubana was born in Britain.

However, more than 10 anti-immigrant protests are planned across the country this weekend, including in the area around at least two mosques in Liverpool, from 9pm Greek time today. On the other hand, various anti-racist demonstrations are planned.

Mosques across the country will be on heightened alert, with thorough checks being carried out on fire safety procedures, CCTV and security measures at entrances and exits, the Muslim Council of Britain said.

Zara Mohammed, the council’s head of security, said representatives from hundreds of mosques had agreed to step up security measures during a briefing yesterday. Many during the meeting also expressed their concerns for the safety of worshipers after receiving threatening phone calls.

“I think there is a sense within the community that we will not be afraid, but we will be cautious and cautious,” Mohamed said in a Zoom interview.

At the same time, it has been revealed by the authorities that the leadership of the British police has agreed to increase resources and deploy a large number of officers during the weekend to prevent any possibility of violence.

Police in Southport, where hundreds of anti-immigration protesters attacked police, set police cars on fire and threw bricks at a mosque on Tuesday night, said they were aware of the planned demonstrations and had “detailed plans and significant police resources” to deal with any unrest. .
