Britain hit hard on Huawei. It has banned its devices in 5G networks

From September next year, British telecommunications companies will not be allowed to install any new devices from the Chinese company Huawei in the fifth generation (5G) networks in Britain. The British government announced it today. The country has been trying to exclude the company from participating in building 5G mobile networks for more than a year, because it considers it a security risk.

Already in July, the cabinet ordered operators to remove already used components from Huawei from the networks by the end of 2027.

Minister Oliver Dowden, who is also responsible for digitization, said today that he was working to ensure that risky suppliers did not figure in 5G networks at all.

The new deadline is shorter than expected, the BBC said. However, the option to keep older equipment from Huawei remains.

According to Washington, Huawei technologies pose a security threat, and Beijing uses them to spy. China has long denied the allegations. US President Donald Trump is pushing US allies, including Britain, to exclude Huawei from building 5G networks.

Britain is preparing a new telecommunications law to give the government more power over telecommunications companies. It will be discussed in second reading by the British Parliament on Tuesday, the BBC noted.
