Johnson’s remarks at the Zoom platform could further exacerbate London-Brussels relations over the supply of Covid-19 vaccines.

“The reason we have succeeded with vaccines is capitalism, greed, my friends,” Johnson was quoted as saying by The Sun.

The newspaper reported that the Prime Minister, addressing the Conservative deputies, later added that he actually regretted what was said and asked to forget it.

An unidentified source in The Sun said the prime minister had not discussed the disagreement with the European Union (EU).

Asked about Johnson’s remarks, British Home Secretary Priti Patela said she had not attended the meeting.

She noted that the Prime Minister has always welcomed the country’s progress on Covid-19 vaccines, not just vaccination.

Patela said Johnson also praised the country’s success in developing vaccines and the role of pharmaceutical companies, science and technology in it.

In the UK, more than 28 million people have already received the first dose of the vaccine. Building on these successes in vaccination, the government plans to gradually ease restrictions on Covid-19.
