–As of Tuesday, fully vaccinated people who test positive for coronavirus will have to have an antigen test daily for a week, while those who have not been vaccinated will need to be isolated for 10 days, the health ministry said.
The Omicron option is rapidly entering the United Kingdom and is expected to become dominant by the middle of the month, said Health Minister Sajid Javid. He explained that the new measures aim to limit the impact of the spread of the infection on people’s daily lives, while helping to reduce the spread of Omicron. Javid called on the population to be vaccinated and to get a booster dose as soon as possible.
The government plans to offer a third dose of the vaccine to anyone over the age of 18 in England by the end of January, and from tomorrow people over the age of 30 will be able to make an appointment for a booster dose.
These announcements are in addition to new measures introduced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, including returning home from work and introducing a green certificate for visiting some places.
Now the new measures will have to be voted on by lawmakers on Tuesday. They must be approved with the support of the opposition Labor Party, despite the distrust of some of Johnson’s Conservative MPs.
The new restrictions are being introduced just over a year after the start of the vaccination campaign in the United Kingdom, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, with 146,000 dead and about 50,000 new cases reported daily.
Just over two weeks after Omicron was established in the United Kingdom, Education Minister Nadym Zahawi announced today on Sky News that the first people infected with the coronavirus have been hospitalized.
In London, Omicron is found in one third of COVID-19 cases.
