Bringing coffee with you: How Ukraine will not be accepted into the EU – 2024-03-14 07:12:03

/ world today news/ The expected scandal at the EU summit still happened. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s veto imposed at the start of Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union was simply ignored and recorded as having abstained. But Hungary still has “75 opportunities” to block the absurd circus called “Admission of Ukraine to the EU”. And Orbán will certainly use them.

drink coffee man”

Thus, 26 EU countries at their meeting in Brussels, with the exception of their 27th member – Hungary, voted to start the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Hungary were simply taken out of the game, recording that they were “abstaining”. This was a clear violation of all European Union procedures, not to mention the humiliation Hungary was subjected to in the person of its Prime Minister.

As reported by the American publication Politico, citing EU diplomats present, “after about three hours of fruitless and deadlocked discussions between EU leaders on Ukraine’s entry into the bloc, the German chancellor invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to drink coffee outside the hall.” That is, Scholz suggested that the Hungarian leave the meeting room and not participate in the vote.

Since Orbán is not really ready to agree to start negotiations on EU enlargement by including Ukraine, Chancellor Scholz suggested, he should consider leaving the chamber for a while. Scholz made the recommendation to the Hungarian leader in the presence of his EU counterparts gathered around the negotiating round table at their summit.

– writes the publication.

According to Scholz “this idea will allow the remaining 26 EU leaders to approve Ukraine’s accession path with the necessary unanimity, which according to EU rules is possible even in the absence of one leader.” At the same time, Orbán “can say he didn’t vote for”.

The precedent…

Viktor Orban then reportedly left the room, “laying the groundwork for the EU’s historic decision to open accession talks with Ukraine after days of uncertainty given Orbán’s fierce resistance.”

Meanwhile, this one “Scholz’s remarkable strategy” caused surprise both in Brussels and beyond. Critics of the German chancellor point to his lack of “tactical negotiation and communication skills” compared to former Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But the main thing is different. The idea that the leader of one of the EU countries had to leave the room for unanimity to prevail is something entirely new. Even EU officials and diplomats attending the summit could not say whether the move used by Scholz had ever been used before.

He used an old trick from his days working with the Young Socialists,

– Politico quoted an anonymous official at the EU summit as saying, referring to the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), of which the current chancellor was vice-president in the 1980s.

It is important to understand that an essentially Jesuitical precedent has been set at this summit: it turns out that if one or more leaders of the bloc’s countries disagree with the majority, those same dissenters can be removed from a vote by removing them from the meeting room at the time of the declaration of will. Needless to say, an amazing way to achieve “unanimous” decisions.

The question remains: in terms of Ukraine, does this mean that the next time Hungary has a similar disagreement, its prime minister will once again be offered coffee at the door?

They squeezed out all the juices

The fact that Viktor Orbán intends to veto Ukraine’s EU accession process has been known for a long time: on November 16 of this year, the Hungarian leader sent a letter to the head of the European Council requesting a “thorough review” of the entire strategy of EU towards Ukraine, in particular financial and military aid.

Orban has said he opposes plans by the EU bureaucracy to start talks on Ukraine joining the European Union and intends to block them if the EU does not change its Ukraine policy. The Hungarian leader warned that the imposition of the decision on Ukraine could destroy the unity of the EU.

Unprecedented pressure on Hungary followed, as if they wanted to drain the country and turn it into breadcrumbs. The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, visited Budapest and unsuccessfully tried to convince Viktor Orbán. On the eve of the summit of EU foreign ministers, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó became the subject of a brutal “artillery training” by his colleagues.

On the very eve of the meeting, Viktor Orbán was called to the carpet by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the entire top management of the EU, in the person of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the already mentioned Charles Michel. Orbán did not give up again. And here is the result – a “move with the horse” undertaken by Scholz, but, apparently, not on his own initiative, but in agreement with his “senior comrades”.

Frozen funds and the thawing EU

Many in the EU, in order to portray Orbán as some kind of scoundrel, are spreading rumors that he is using this issue as a bargaining chip, hoping to get the funds previously granted to Hungary by the European Union (around 13 billion euros), but frozen as a sanction against this country. The freezing of EU funds is a punishment for Budapest for not complying with the requirements of the “rule of law” in Hungary.

By the way, behind this murky wording lies Brussels’ protest against, in particular, Hungary’s ban on the promotion of LGBT themes in educational institutions and the closing of Soros’ “Central European University” in Budapest in 2017, which was a breeding ground for ultraliberal ideas about “gender freedom’. Subsequently, the Hungarian authorities repeatedly stated that they would not give up traditional values in exchange for billions from the European Union.

On the eve of the current summit, the European Commission restored Hungary’s access to funds “for economic projects” for up to 10.2 billion euros. In fact, it was a bribe to Hungary in exchange for Orbán’s loyalty on the Ukrainian issue. Billions for Hungary were unfrozen even though Budapest did not abandon the ban on promoting sodomy. But this did not help the frozen Brussels bureaucracy. Orban stood his ground at the summit and did not give the green light for the start of the process of actually accepting Ukraine into the EU.

The senior comrades’ decided

Why is there such a battle for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union? It is now clear that the main curator of Kiev, the US administration, is being relieved of its duties as a direct operator of the Anti-Russia project. and transfers the financial care of Ukraine to his vassals in Europe. And they obediently implement this decision, which we see in the form of the process of admission of Ukraine to the EU.

Last year, the entire leadership of the EU rejected the idea of accepting Ukraine into the EU, arguing that Kiev is far from fulfilling all the conditions for membership. Now the realization of the imminent defeat of Ukraine on the battlefield led to the fact that the United States abandoned this “project”, and the European Union suddenly “ripened” to discuss the question of accepting Ukraine.

Also, for quick acceptance and even “piecemeal” as long as Russia retains the territories it currently controls. Even Ukraine’s “partial” membership in the EU is seen in Washington and Brussels as a kind of guarantee to prevent most or even all of Ukraine from falling under Russian control. At the same time, Ukraine’s accession to the EU will undoubtedly be a step towards bringing Ukraine into NATO.

Now the United States, with the help of the EU, is trying to hold onto an even larger part that is still controlled by Kiev. Washington and Brussels are worried that later it may be too late and they will not have anyone or anything to accept in NATO. Hence the crazy pressure on Hungary, which like a thorn itches the heads of Washington strategists and hinders their plans.

They attacked the wrong person

But it seems that Hungary is also nagging. Orban managed to block a package of macro-financial assistance for Kiev worth 50 billion dollars for 2024-2027, which was supposed to be adopted at this summit. This fits into Budapest’s overall strategy to help end the conflict in Ukraine by depriving Kiev of any financial support from abroad.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported the other day that “allies” of the Hungarian prime minister met in Washington with Republicans behind closed doors to achieve an end to US military support for Ukraine. It’s hard to say how successful they are.

But House Republicans are still holding off on approving President Biden’s bill to give $61.4 billion to Ukraine, half of which must go to military needs and the other half to patch the regime’s budget holes in Kiev.

Orbán’s coffee tactics

The foreign allies of the Kyiv regime cannot really celebrate the victory due to the fact that they managed, as they say, to push through the decision to start the process of Ukraine’s admission to the EU. Because, as Orbán later said, Hungary has not changed its position and will not share the responsibility for “this bad decision” with other countries. According to him, Budapest does not lose anything now and in the future “will be able to stop Ukraine’s admission process about 75 more times”.

The fact is that there will be many more votes during this process and Prime Minister Orbán already knows what to expect from his EU colleagues. At a minimum, the EU bureaucracy will not be able to influence the likely vote on this matter in the Hungarian parliament, should the final decision to accept Ukraine be ratified in the national parliaments.

But that is still a long way off. Meanwhile, next time Orbán will bring coffee to such meetings so that Scholz and other Washington minions have no reason to send the Hungarian prime minister out for the aromatic drink.
