Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Head of Aviation and Space Research Organization at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Robertus Heru reveal the original mission of the current researcher Timau ObservatoryEast Nusa Tenggara (NTT), completed construction.
He explained that in the initial research phase the team would capture images in the field of view of the southern sky.
“So he has field of view to the sky south of the equator. From there, there are several nebula targets or something to photograph first,” he said, in Jakarta, Monday (7/8).
Robertus explained that his team would search for celestial objects such as stars, asteroids, and satellites that are currently in orbit, both Indonesian and foreign.
Later, telecommunications companies will also be able to carry out satellite observations from the Timau Observatory. That way, any anomalies on the satellite can be seen if there are irregularities in the sensors or electronic devices.
“That big telescope besides being scientific equipment it can help like that. For example, there is a friend who has a problematic satellite, later it can be seen from there,” he said.

The team that will carry out the first mission at the beginning of the year comes from the Bandung Space Research Center. In addition, there is also a combination of universities such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the Sumatran Institute of Technology (ITERA).
Regarding the progress of the construction of the Timau Observatory, Robertus said that currently the secondary mirror has been installed.
Soon the installation of primary and tertiary mirrors will also be carried out soon. If everything has been done, then the team just needs to calibrate the mirror.
Robertus targets the construction of the Observatory to be completed in September 2023.
Previously, the Coordinator of the Kupang National Observatory Station BRIN Abdul Rachman, Saturday (29/7), said the Timau observatory would be completed in a matter of months.
“The main instrument, namely the 3.8m telescope and its buildings including a 14m diameter dome, has been built around 55%. The main instrument is targeted to be completed in the next 2-3 months,” he said, quoted from a BRIN press release.
The location of the Timau Observatory is in a protected forest area on the slopes of Mount Timau at an altitude of about 1,300 meters above sea level.
