BRIN Researcher: Increase the achievement of full-dose COVID-19 vaccination

The main thing is for the immunity of this group the most important…

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A researcher at the Eijkman Center for Molecular Biology Research and Innovation at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Amin Soebandrio said it was important to achieve full-dose COVID-19 vaccination for the Indonesian population.

According to Amin, a minimum of 70 percent of the Indonesian population must be vaccinated against the full dose of COVID-19 to form group immunity in the community.

“The main thing is that the immunity of this group is the most important,” Amin said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta, Friday.

Amin said indeed the immunity generated from the COVID-19 vaccination did not last forever to protect people from COVID-19 infection. Over time, the immunity that is formed from both the COVID-19 vaccination and natural infection will decrease.

According to research, immunity after a full dose of COVID-19 vaccination can last up to 12 months. After that, the immunity will decrease.

However, the body that already has the ability to form antibodies because it is stimulated by the COVID-19 vaccine or has been sick with COVID-19, will have memory cells to re-form immunity to fight the same virus.

That means when a person gets attacked by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, his memory cells will remember and try to form immunity to fight the viral infection.

“Immunologically, he has a memory that can remember, that is also an important factor that later if he meets again with the same or similar virus, the body will form immunity more quickly,” said Amin.

But at least the body has learned to fight the virus by building immunity as it has done when exposed to a COVID-19 infection or stimulated by a COVID-19 vaccination.

“We hope that memory cells will function to produce antibodies, at least if he (the person) is infected again, then this body still has immunity even though it was down, he (immunity) will quickly rise again,” said Amin.

Therefore, in the midst of the limited availability of the COVID-19 vaccine, the priority at this time is the acceleration of the COVID-19 vaccination with a complete dose rather than a booster.

By forming group immunity in the community, you can build a shield to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from finding new hosts (humans) to infect the body and mutate.

Currently, the Government of Indonesia continues to strive to bring in COVID-19 vaccines from various sources to meet the needs of the community and increase the achievement of COVID-19 vaccinations and develop the Red and White vaccine.
