Research Center for Space Research BRINAndi Pangerang gave an explanation about the monitoring system real time for extraterrestrial objects that fall to Earth.
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) said space objects that fell into Earth initially only natural objects. However, since humans are capable of launching rockets, artificial objects have the potential to fall and cause damage to Earth.
Data shows that currently there are more than 40 thousand artificial celestial bodies measuring more than 10 cm orbiting the Earth. More than 90 percent of them are artificial objects that don’t work and are called space junk.
“Yes, that’s right, the category is dangerous. If it is dangerous, it needs special handling,” Andi said CNNIndonesia.comWednesday (8/6).
This condition finally prompted the BRIN Space Research Center to create a system to monitor the falling space debris. The system is said to be able to provide information regarding artificial space objects that cross the Indonesian sky with an altitude of less than 200 kilometers.
“The maximum altitude of 200 km from the earth’s surface is the height where the drag on the object is smaller than the gravitational force experienced by the object. That makes the object’s height tend to decrease,” explained Andi.
Andi further said that the minimum height of space debris to watch out for is 90 kilometers.
“That’s because the potential for objects to fall will be greater where the drag on the object is not enough to withstand the gravitational force experienced by the object,” he said.
The government is also said to have anticipated if one day a space object falls into Indonesian territory. Including one of them is monitoring the traces of the estimated location of the fall of artificial space objects, for example in residential areas.
“BRIN is collaborating with BPBD/BNPB in mitigating the impact of falling artificial space objects and giving an appeal to the public to immediately stay away from the place for a while, while evacuating to another safer place. Compensation is also given according to the severity of the damage. that occurred as a result of the impact of the artificial falling space object,” concluded Andi.
