Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The main components used for electric vehicle type of lithium-ion battery. This type of battery is claimed to be superior in terms of service life to a faster charging process, but also has a number of risks in owning it.
Batteries with chemical elements are said to have dangerous compounds because they are very sensitive to voltage from equipment and ambient temperature.
“This is very sensitive to temperature and voltage,” said engineer at the Center for Energy Conversion Technology of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Oo Abdul Rosyid in the IEMS 2021 discussion broadcast online, quoted on Friday (11/26).
He explained on an electric vehicle battery pack, it requires hundreds to thousands of cells. This amount is different from the electricity needs of conventional cars because the main driver is a fuel engine.
On the other hand, the thousands of cells that are made into one battery pack are related to each other. So if there is a problem cell, it will automatically spread to all battery cells.
This then becomes a danger from electric vehicles, namely a fire or even an explosion.
“The example of this Tesla Model S is 7000 cells, the Gesits electric motor is 100 cells combined in series and parallel. Yes, if one cell has a problem, everything will have problems. For example, if you hit it, everything will explode, everything will be in chains. So here we need to anticipate,” he said. .
He gave an example that cases of electric vehicles burning for no reason are not new abroad. The incident happened while it was parked, or when it was plugged in while charging the battery.
Several cases of electric vehicles burning due to batteries that he noted include a Chevrolet electric car in 2011, then a Tesla Model S car several incidents in 2013-2019, and a Jaguar i-Pace in 2018.
“Well, we may have heard that Tesla was burned. The fire was also parked. Now, in Indonesia, which has hot weather and others. But this issue must be minimized and anticipated,” said Rosyid.
For this reason, due to the increasing demand for electric vehicles in Indonesia, he said it is very important to standardize batteries for the safety needs of pure electric car users.
“So from here we emphasize that lithium batteries must go through testing and certification. Why do they meet quality and technical requirements. Starting from performance, performance, and the main thing is also a matter of safety“Oo Abdul closed.
