Sparta has settled with FC Emmen. Thanks to a fantastic goal by Abdou Harroui, who scored with a nice long shot in the second half, the Eredivisionist from Drenthe was beaten 2-1.
Prior to the match against Emmen, Sparta was only one point ahead of number fifteen Heracles Almelo, so it was important for the team from Rotterdam to increase that margin against the finalist of the Eredivisie. However, the difference in points in the rankings was not visible in the opening phase of the match. Both teams did not play well and the viewers had to rely on some sparse moments.
After more than twenty minutes, Sparta took the lead, but the way that happened was actually indicative of the game. Glenn Bijl painfully made the mistake on behalf of the guests from Emmen, after which Deroy Duarte managed to work the ball over the line with his knee. That funny goal was the only highlight of the first half.
Shortly after the break, the team of trainer Dick Lukkien, who had playmaker Sergio Peña again at his disposal, came back into the game. That goal also fell in a special way: Michael de Leeuw headed an Anco Jansen corner through the back of defender Miguel Araujo against the ropes and in that way ensured the barely deserved 1-1.
Emmen created very little and did not deserve to win against Sparta, which itself could not impress. Yet another decision was made, and it was thanks to Spartan Abdou Harroui. His nice long shot after an hour of playing football did not fit in the game, but it was the winning goal: 2-1. As a result, the team from Drenthe remains at the bottom of the league and Sparta rises to place nine in the ranking for the time being.
