Brigadier Joyce has to give terrible news: “She’s dead”

Ewout enters Arnhem office along with six different couples, including Joyce and Kees. Kees has been working for the police for eleven years and the action and feel of his work gives him a thrill every day. Joyce has also been in the business for a while, fifteen years. Upon entering, it becomes clear that unfortunately the lady is no longer alive. “Unfortunately, we found the lady dead in bed. (…) she was lying very neatly in a kind of ‘sleep’,” Joyce tells Ewout calmly. Since she has been through these kinds of situations before, she now knows what to expect. “When you enter that room, you already think: someone could be lying here. He is an adult.”

Although the situation is bad enough, Joyce must also pass the sad news on to the daughter of the deceased, who is still waiting outside. “Your concerns were completely justified,” she tries to reassure her. Joyce discovers that the woman continues to thank her later “the most bizarre”. “You don’t have to thank me for that. I also think it’s terrible to say it,” she tells Ewout.
