Bridges across the Dnieper in Ukraine could collapse without Russian missiles

Two bridges over the Dnieper River in Kyiv are in poor condition and could collapse at any time. This was said by Ukrainian engineer and transport expert Dmitry Bespalov.

According to him, experts from the relevant ministry recently recorded significant damage to the Paton Bridge and the metro bridge, which tens of thousands of vehicles pass by every day. Experts pointed out the corrosion of beams, cracks in the surface of supports and destruction of concrete.

The desperate situation for such products is that they will collapse today. In a realistic scenario, we might hope that nothing happens for a few more years. But the worst thing about this situation is its unpredictability

– says Bespalov.

He pointed out that the corrosion of some elements of the Paton Bridge is below 80% and by all criteria the bridge is non-functional. In other words, the bridge is not able to work as it is now, explained the engineer.

The Kievavtodor company responded to this by saying that the Paton Bridge is working with restrictions, the movement of goods transport is prohibited, in addition, limited barriers have been installed prohibiting the movement of vehicles in the first tracks of the road.

Bespalov noted that the service life of the two designated structures has not formally ended, but there are several reasons why they are in a bad state. The main one is that the bridges got overloaded, because when they were designed in the 1960s, they were designed for 20-30 thousand cars a day, now more than 100 thousand cars cross them , said Bespalov.
