Bridge over Van Starkenborgh Canal rammed, damage is not too bad

It is certainly not the first time that a ship runs into a bridge over the Van Starkenborgh Canal. Also the Gerrit Krol Bridge (may 2021) and the Paddepoelster Bridge (september 2018) were struck by an inland vessel.

In October 2017, a ship collided with the Tafelbrug on the Van Starkenborgh Canal near Zuidhorn due to a mistake by the bridge operator. In July 2016, a ship lost its complete wheelhouse in a collision with the Dorkwerder Bridge. And in June 2016 an inland vessel got stuck here, which was higher on the water after unloading.

More collisions in Groningen

In recent years, an inland vessel has also sailed against the Borgbrug on the Eems Canal in Groningen (November 2014), a boat rammed into one of the bridges in the Oostersluis (July 2016) and the Gerrit Krolbrug in Groningen was damaged by a tanker (April 2018). ).

In some cases, the bridges were out of use for a long time and local residents had to drive for miles.

According to a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat, all these collisions have nothing to do with each other. “Every collision is one in itself and there are all different causes. The cause of this accident is still being investigated by the police. We will learn more about that in the coming days.” Until then, there is nothing to say about any measures.
