The deplorable state of America’s infrastructure could hardly have become apparent at a more remarkable moment: Just hours before President Biden was due to speak in the city of Pittsburgh about his multi-billion dollar infrastructure investment, a bridge collapsed twenty meters there.
The bridge was covered in snow and the collapse also led to a gas leak, forcing residents to be evacuated. Several vehicles tumbled down, including a bus, and ten people were slightly injured.
According to the authorities, the incident eventually came to an end. The bridge ended up on a pedestrian walkway in a park, but no one was walking there at the time.
The mayor says the bridge was still checked in September. He points out that Biden’s infrastructure plan is of great importance to his city and the state of Pennsylvania. “We know there are bridges that we need to pay attention to,” he said.
