Bridge between time and space: Researchers create baby wormhole for the first time

In theory, a wormhole should be possible, that passage between two distant places, or through time. The famous physicists Nathan Rosen and Albert Einstein have not denied this possibility, quite the contrary. But theory and practice are often two worlds apart. Meanwhile, the shortcut through the universe is conquering science fiction films and books and with it the human imagination. Does being able to teleport to other planets at the speed of light have its appeal, or would you rather have a glimpse into the future?

The researchers tried it on a quantum computer

While others fantasize and dream, researchers at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena (Caltech for short) have “simply” tried it on a quantum computer. They simulated the connection between two black holes, which together form a wormhole, and thus sent information in a very short time. All this, of course, in a small format and not in the real universe, but we are still relatively close to the original. It remains to be seen whether people will one day travel this way to distant places in the universe, in the future or in the past. But suppose the researchers won’t stop at their first small success.

Space and time have been broken apart in a realistic simulation

In physics, the disdainful “wormhole” has another, more pleasant-sounding name, namely the Einstein-Rosen bridge. Due to a strong curvature of space-time, distant places or times merge here. California scientists created their gateway by finding a quantum system that possesses the key properties of a gravitational wormhole. However, it is small enough to exist on existing quantum hardware. Space and time hasn’t really been broken through, it’s kind of a realistic simulation. But precisely with this simulation, the wormhole idea could be further studied in the laboratory. The results of the study were published in detail in the journal »Nature«.
