A 42-year-old Florida woman is accused of serving marijuana-infused food to unsuspecting wedding guests at her wedding. The woman and the caterer of the wedding reception were arrested Monday. They have been released on bail.
According to the police, a number of people became ill at the reception on February 19. The reception was attended by about forty people. One guest testified that he ate meatballs, salad and bread with herb dip and then “felt weird, had a tingling sensation and became restless.” His sister-in-law became dizzy and vomited, she told police.
Another woman ate bread with olive oil and later felt “her heart would stop.” Two other guests said they were not feeling well and asked for water from the staff present. One of the staff is said to have said, “Well, there’s cannabis in the food”. Other guests complained that they had become paranoid.
Green substance
The bride is said to have admitted to one of her guests that there was marijuana in the food, but she denied it in a later text message to another guest. A guest saw the caterer put “a green substance” in the olive oil. She said she didn’t taste anything special when she ate bread with olive oil, but felt stoned afterwards.
Several people had to go to hospital. An investigation indeed revealed that the guests had ingested marijuana. All guests surveyed said they had no idea beforehand that there was marijuana in their food. The police also investigated the food from the wedding. THC, the active ingredient in hashish, was found in the lasagna and in the chocolate-dipped strawberries, among other things.
Legal medical use
The incident was widely reported in American media. They tried to get in touch with the woman and her caterer, but were unsuccessful. Why they might have done this is still a mystery. They will face court later this year.
In Florida, the use of medical marijuana is legal, but recreational use is prohibited.
