The BRICS countries have invited Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia to join their partnership. This was announced by South African President Ramaphosa at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg.

Yesterday, the club of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa announced that they had agreed on a mechanism to determine who can join. More than forty countries had expressed an interest in membership of BRICS.

Enlargement is one of the main topics at the 15th BRICS Summit, which concludes today. There was disagreement about how fast the partnership should grow. China was in favor of rapid expansion, while India argued against.

Alternative to the wealthy West

BRICS currently consists of five countries that make up about 40 percent of the world’s population in terms of population. The group presents itself as an alternative to the wealthy Western partnerships such as the G7.

The members are critical of international bodies such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. An alternative to the global standard payment in dollars for gas and oil is also being sought.
