/ world today news/ Before President Vladimir Putin’s supposed visit to Tokyo, the Japanese government is preparing to ask Russia to commit to the 2001 agreement on ways to resolve the dispute over the ownership of the southern Kuril Islands.
In Tokyo, they claim that they intend to discuss with Moscow the fate of the four disputed islands, as a whole, and not “parts of them”.
“Tokyo wants to make sure that they are on the same page with Moscow in discussing the issues surrounding the disputed islands before inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin for an official visit to Japan for high-level talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” the agency reported. The Japanese side is asking Moscow for confirmation of its commitment to the 2001 agreement on ways to resolve the border dispute for the four Kuril islands, TASS quoted the Kyodo news agency as saying.
In 2001, in Irkutsk, Vladimir Putin and then Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori agreed to work towards signing a peace treaty based on resolving the dispute over the territorial ownership of the four islands – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.
