BRICS Expansion: Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Ethiopia Joining the Association

Five countries officially have joined to BRICS – Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Ethiopia. Previously, the association included only Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, after the first letters of whose names it was named.

The accession of new countries to BRICS was announced in August 2023 at the final plenary meeting of the association’s summit in Johannesburg. Then we were talking about six states: in addition to Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Ethiopia, Argentina was supposed to join BRICS. However, at the end of December, its president, Javier Miley, officially notified Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping that Argentina would not become a member of BRICS.

Miley, who became Argentina’s president on December 10, noted that he does not currently consider the country’s participation in the organization appropriate. Even during the election campaign, he stated that if he won, he would refuse Argentina’s accession to BRICS, criticized China and Brazil, which were members of it, and also stated that if elected president, he would not deal with “communists.”
