BRICS Emergency Meeting: Putin to Discuss Gaza Crisis with World Leaders

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin will join an emergency video conference with other BRICS leaders, Tuesday (21/11/2023). This was done to discuss the ongoing escalation between Israel and the Palestinian Gaza militant group, Hamas.

Earlier on Monday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office said he would chair an extraordinary joint meeting on the situation in Gaza. South Africa currently leads the BRICS group, which also includes Russia, China, Brazil and India.

Apart from the permanent members of BRICS, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates were also invited to join the event.

All participants will comment on “the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” the Kremlin statement was quoted as saying Russia Today.

“Leaders are expected to adopt a joint statement on this issue. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also join the meeting,” according to the statement.

Israel has been conducting a major military operation in Gaza for more than a month now. This step was taken in response to the sudden attack by Hamas, which killed around 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and also kidnapped 240 citizens.

Tel Aviv responded with a massive bombing campaign against Gaza followed by ground operations. The death toll related to Israel’s actions in the enclave has surpassed 11,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Russia has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told RT that the only way to end Israeli-Palestinian violence is through the framework of a serious UN-backed two-state solution.
