BRI President Director Joins Davos, Global CEO Discusses Inclusion to ESG

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI) represented by BRI President Director Sunarso also attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) which was being held in Davos, Switzerland.

Sunarso said the forum, which has been held since May 22, 2022 and will end on May 26, 2022, has 2,000 participants.

“There are global CEOs and many other influential parties. The main topics discussed include globalization, digitalization, implementation, global ESG, financial inclusion,” he said, Wednesday (25/5/2022).

Sunarso said that regarding the impact of globalization and future trends of globalization, the panelists who he participated in saw that globalization was driving global economic growth. However, there is a tendency for regional and domestic fragmentation to disrupt the pace of the global economy.

“The fragmentation factors are pandemics and geopolitics, disruption of supply chains, logistics and others, so fragmentation. The fragmentation that used to be globalization but was held back, or deglobalization,” he explained.

The panelists also emphasized collaboration and cooperation with all parties, because issues regarding the pandemic, cyber security and others can be overcome through collaboration.

“Globalization is evaluated to produce economic growth, but there are various other external and geopolitical factors. This is perceived as holding back global economic growth, therefore collaborative efforts are needed,” he explained.

Matters related to the environment, ESG, are important for sustainability in order to increase prosperity, and BRI sees MSMEs as the main drivers of the Indonesian economy, playing an important role in ESG now and in the future.

“So it is crucial to provide education and awareness to MSMEs to ensure the sustainability of their business through ESG,” said Sunarso.

Furthermore, Sunarso explained that BRI also sees consistent and targeted implementation of ESG starting with the main concern, namely Governance. With good governance, the implementation of ESG is expected to be more focused and measurable so that it can encourage the sustainability of the business being carried out. “Tone from the top” or initiation from Leaders is an important element to encourage the implementation of this side of Governance.

In practice, if BRI wants to implement ESG, it must still be able to grow and pay attention to the planet (earth), people and society.

“For attention to humans and others, it must be designed in governance, the leader must design a vision. A leader must have values that are translated and oriented to human prosperity. The initiation of the leader is an important element in terms of governance.”

Furthermore, it is related to the topic of financial inclusion, so involving many business actors will be better than focusing on certain business actors. In financial inclusion, giving to all business actors is far better than just giving to certain people.

“Pandemics teach many things, apart from inclusion is digitalization. This issue is relevant in Indonesia, the target of financial inclusion is 90% in 2024, the financial literacy index is still low and it is our duty to make people literate and this is a concern, and it is not enough to talk. movement, systematic, systematic, with targets and others, that’s part of the financial literacy index.”
