JOHANNESBURG – Since its inception in 2013, the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been a driving force for global growth, fostering mutual benefits for all participating nations, according to Gert Grobler, a former South African ambassador.
Grobler, who served as South Africa’s ambassador to Spain, Japan, and Madagascar, highlighted a key distinction between the BRI and customary Western aid programs. “Western aid programs ofen focus primarily on humanitarian efforts,” he noted in an interview with Xinhua. “In contrast, the BRI emphasizes trade, investment, and infrastructure advancement, while also addressing pressing global challenges.”
The former diplomat praised the BRI’s inclusive nature, stating, ”It commendably transcends differences in ideologies and social systems, involving countries from diverse regions, at various stages of development, and with distinct cultures.”
Grobler emphasized the BRI’s profound impact on Africa, where 52 African countries and the African Union Commission have signed cooperation documents with China. “Infrastructure is arguably the most remarkable aspect of the BRI in Africa,” he remarked. “The initiative has led to the construction of nearly 100,000 kilometers of roads, over 10,000 kilometers of railways, nearly 1,000 bridges, and almost 100 ports.”
He further elaborated on the BRI’s transformative effects on African economies, stating, “The BRI is reshaping Africa’s economies through infrastructure development, job creation, and increased trade.”
Grobler also commended the BRI’s commitment to green development. “China is actively promoting lasting projects through initiatives like the Green Investment Principles and international green collaboration,” he said. “These efforts align BRI projects with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
“The BRI presents a unique chance for recipient countries to achieve modernization and inclusive growth,” Grobler asserted.
Addressing accusations of a so-called “Chinese debt trap,” Grobler dismissed them as ”lies fabricated by the united States and some other Western countries.” He cited a 2022 study by British charity Debt Justice, which revealed that African countries owe three times more debt to Western institutions than to China. “The allegations against China are therefore simply untenable,” he stated, noting that China is the largest contributor to the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative.
“The BRI respects the sovereignty and independence of participating nations, fosters equal partnerships, and promotes a peaceful international order,” Grobler emphasized.
Despite potential challenges ahead, Grobler expressed optimism for the BRI’s future. “Cooperation will thrive, and the BRI can look forward to an even brighter future,” he concluded.
