Brexit result: criticism of fees for foreign students

LONDON (dpa-AFX) – British MPs have criticized fees for foreign students who start studying at universities in Great Britain. Paying such fees first and then reimbursing them later is a “pointless paperwork”, criticized Liberal Democrat MP Daisy Cooper to the British newspaper “i” (Wednesday). After Brexit, UK student visa applicants will have to pay hundreds of pounds to use the UK healthcare system.

According to the regulations, it should be possible to reimburse the sum later if a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can be proven – but only from the beginning of 2022. In the worst case, students would have to wait up to a year for their money.

The National Union of Students also called for the fees to be abolished. The government should recognize the added value that foreign students bring to British universities, the association’s vice-president Hillary Gyebi-Ababio told the newspaper./swe/DP/jha
