Brexit news: Starmer and Sturgeon in ‘satirical ploy’ to oust Boris and ‘reverse’ Brexit | politics

Keir Starmer questions his silence on the failure of Britain’s exit from the European Union

Boris Johnson has been called repeatedly by leaders of the Labor Party and the Scottish National Party after he was fined for attending a Downing Street party when strict national lockdown rules were in place. During a tense two-hour session in the House of Commons on Tuesday, the Prime Minister issued 35 apologies to MPs for attending the event on June 19, 2020. Enraged Sir Keir Starmer again slammed Mr Johnson for breaking the lockdown. Rules imposed by his government calling for his resignation.

But Neil Gardiner, a foreign policy expert and former adviser to Margaret Thatcher, claimed the opposition parties’ calls were a “cynical ploy” to oust the Prime Minister and “undo Brexit for good.”

He wrote on Twitter: “Make no mistake. Labour/SNP/Liberals’ calls for BorisJohnson to resign have a purpose.

“To turn back the clock, take out the Prime Minister with a massive electoral mandate and ultimately undo Brexit.

“The vast majority of Conservative MPs will see through this ironic ploy and reject it.”

As the Partygate probe began earlier this year, Gardiner warned that Sir Keir and Ms Sturgeon’s Brexit could be shattered in a disastrous Labour/SNP plan if Johnson is impeached as Prime Minister.

He said should the Conservative Party be defeated in a snap general election, the two opposition parties could form a close alliance that would “challenge the will of the British people and tear Brexit apart”.

A foreign policy expert told Express.co.uk: “Boris Johnson brought about Brexit and changed British history and the country’s future for the better.

“The left hates Boris above all for what he achieved with Brexit.

“They see the Prime Minister’s fall as an opportunity to derail the entire Brexit process.”

Gardiner went on to warn: “There could be a snap general election and the polls show Labor are way ahead.

“This is a very cynical exercise to try to remove Boris from power, force a snap general election and roll back the whole Brexit project.

“If the Labor Party and the Scottish National Party form a close coalition, they will both defy the will of the British people and tear Brexit apart.”

After the Brexit referendum in June 2016, both the Labor Party and the Scottish National Party have often spoken out strongly against the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.

Sir Keir campaigned for a second referendum on Britain’s membership in the bloc led by Jeremy Corbyn’s Labor Party.

Under the Labor leadership of Mr Corbyn, the then Brexit Secretary was at the forefront of his party’s campaign to support Remain in a second EU referendum.

He had said: “Following the local elections and the EU elections in particular, there are many in the Labor Party who think we need to be very clear about the second referendum and the question of whereabouts.

“That’s definitely what I’m defending. The talks are ongoing at the moment. I hope we can resolve it soon and I think that will be a significant step in the right direction.”

Britain's exit from the European Union

Sir Keir, who has remained silent on Brexit since his appointment as Labor leader in April 2020, admitted there was little chance of the UK returning to the EU.

Scottish National Party leader Ms Sturgeon has also repeatedly expressed her anger at Brexit, using it as a reason for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Although the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in the June 2016 referendum, 62 percent of Scots voted to remain in the European Union.

When the UK government signed a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU in December 2020, Ms Sturgeon was furious: “The people of Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU but their views were ignored.

“This Brexit is much more difficult than we could have imagined when the EU referendum took place, damaging and disrupting this country’s economy and society at the worst possible time.

“We are doing everything we can to mitigate the consequences of the UK Government’s actions – but we cannot avoid all the negative consequences.

“We know businesses are already struggling under the burden of COVID-19 and are now faced with the need to prepare for this hard Brexit in just over a week.”

She added: “Scotland voted for none of this and our position is clearer than ever. Scotland now has the right to choose its future as an independent country and reap the benefits of EU membership.”
