Brexit news: Nancy Pelosi slammed for ‘teaching Brits’ amid ‘trade deal threats’ | Politics | Messages

At a dinner for Irish politicians in Washington, Democrat spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi warned that Brexit negotiations should not stand in the way of the peace process in Northern Ireland. Foreign policy analyst Nile Gardiner slammed her “threatening threats” in a Twitter thread and accused Joe Biden’s Democratic Party of “undermining” the will of the British people.

Mr Gardiner took to Twitter to express his outrage at Nancy Pelosi’s ultimatum that there would be no US trade deal if a hard border were created in Ireland.

Taking to the social media site, he wrote: “@SpeakerPelosi must stop lecturing the British people on Brexit policy, making looming threats to a US-UK trade deal and undermining the special relationship.

“With the US midterm elections looming and the strong prospect of a conservative revolution in Congress, most polls suggest @SpeakerPelosi will be in no position to threaten a US-UK trade deal after November.

“In fact, she probably won’t hold a position of power at all.

“It is extraordinary that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives should devote so much time/energy to threatening America’s closest friend/ally, Britain.

“This is Joe Biden’s party doing whatever it takes to undermine Brexit/the democratic will of the British people.”

Many others on Twitter shared his beliefs.

Ms Pelosis’s threats not to reach a deal with the UK over Brexit concerns have long been a contentious issue.

She said in 2020: “The Good Friday Agreement is the bedrock of peace in Northern Ireland and an inspiration to the whole world.

“The UK must comply with the Northern Ireland Protocol signed with the EU to ensure the free movement of goods across the border.

“If the UK breaches this international treaty and Brexit undermines the Good Friday Agreement, there is absolutely no chance of a US-UK trade deal passing Congress.”
