The Brexit negotiations are still stuck. The British Health Minister Hancock now called the EU’s position unreasonably. She would have to withdraw her demands. Time is getting really tight now.
Before the possibly decisive Brexit negotiations, the British government is calling for the European Union to act. Health Minister Matt Hancock told Sky News that the EU must change its position and withdraw its “unreasonable demands”.
“I’m sure that a deal can succeed, but obviously there needs to be movement on the EU side.”
He assumes that both camps want the talks to end positively. He described the EU’s demands as inappropriate. “You do not respect the result of the referendum,” said Hancock, referring to the referendum on Britain’s exit from the EU.
Dispute over fishing and competition rules
Hancock reiterated that the crux of the matter lies with fishing and the so-called equal competition rules. The future fishing quotas in British waters are particularly important for France.
Already on Saturday it was said in British government circles that the demands of the EU were incompatible with the independence of Great Britain. A hard Brexit could therefore be imminent at the end of the year.
Urgent proceedings at Christmas time?
Great Britain officially left the EU at the end of January, to which it had been a member since 1973. The transition phase ends on December 31, during which the kingdom still has to apply EU rules. Thereafter, without a trade agreement, there is a risk of higher tariffs on many products and long waiting times at the border.
A deal would have to be approved in an urgent procedure in various parliaments around Christmas. Many deadlines had recently passed without result. Both sides repeatedly demand concessions from their respective counterparts.
