Brexit: Even one day before the deadline, no breakthrough in negotiations

Shortly before what is probably the decisive day in the struggle for a Brexit trade pact, according to information from the negotiating circles, no solution is in sight. The negotiations in Brussels continued, but remained difficult, according to SPIEGEL information from British government circles. Further talks, including on Sunday, are likely.

As planned, it is expected that EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will speak to each other on Sunday. The British position was unchanged: any agreement must be fair and respect the principles of sovereignty and control.

Trade barriers threaten

Great Britain left the EU at the beginning of the year. There is still a transition period until the end of the year, during which almost everything will remain the same. If no trade pact has been agreed by then, there is a risk of high tariffs and other trade barriers.

The main points of contention are the issues of a fair playing field and access for European fishermen to British waters. Both sides have given themselves until Sunday to find an agreement.
