Brexit consequences: trade between the EU and Great Britain collapses

news-source="dpa-afx">

LONDON (dpa-AFX) – Trade between Great Britain and EU countries has decreased significantly after Brexit. According to figures from the British statistics agency ONS on Tuesday, the trading volume in the first quarter of this year was almost a quarter (23.1 percent) lower than in the same period of 2018, which is considered the last stable trading period.

The fact that trade with non-European countries only fell by 0.8 percent in the same period shows that this is not just an effect of the corona pandemic. At the same time, the UK’s trade volume with non-European countries exceeded that with its EU trading partners for the first time in the three months of this year.

Great Britain finally left the EU internal market and the European customs union at the turn of the year. Customs duties are largely avoided by a trade and cooperation agreement, but formalities and controls due to product standards have made trade across the English Channel considerably more complicated./cmy/DP/mis
