From today, British customs will carry out additional checks on food and flowers from the Netherlands and other EU countries. That is a consequence of Brexit. This means that British people will pay more for these products, reports Sky News.
The introduction of the controls has already been postponed five times due to concerns about rapidly rising food prices. Imported products are expected to cost around 385 million euros more per year due to the extra checks.
The rules apply to meat, fish, cheese and dairy products and five types of common cut flowers from the EU. These products must have a health certificate signed by an EU official, such as a veterinarian or factory inspector.
A certificate is sufficient for the time being, but from April 30 the checks will be expanded to include product inspections. This can lead to supply problems. Business advocates have called on the British government to abandon these inspections.
With the controls, the government wants to protect the British against pests and diseases. The government also hopes that the rules will provide a level playing field, as similar rules were introduced for British exporters four years ago.
