In this edition of the World Briefing, the former Foreign Secretary takes a look at the situation in Great Britain. The coverage is determined by images of long lines at gas stations and empty supermarket shelves. They are accompanied by opponents of Brexit who say “I told you so”. The much bigger problem, however, is the trade problems between Northern Ireland and the UK. The British government points the finger at Brussels and criticizes the lack of support from the EU. But the calls for new contract negotiations are fading. The possible new Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has recently shown himself very cautious. Sigmar Gabriel says: “Of course I understand when people say, that’s enough with the British, they always have special requests. First they want to get out, then it goes wrong, then you should help again. ” Nevertheless, the future federal government should not turn away. He talks about how to deal with the British, what role Germany and the EU should play and why he does not believe that Brexit will be followed by more exits.
