Brexit activist Nigel Farage leaves the political stage

Probably the best-known Brexit proponent – Nigel Farage – announced on Saturday that he wanted to give up the chairmanship of the “Reform UK” party he had launched. True to the motto: you can’t achieve more.

Farage came into the focus of the political public in the time before Brexit, when he fired massively against Brussels and its institutions in his role as leader of the eurosceptic UK Independence Party (UKIP).

Not without success, because his commitment (and his half-truths) is credited in particular for the fact that in 2016 the United Kingdom held the referendum that was either fatal or liberating, depending on the point of view, which ushered in the departure of the UK from the EU.

Farage says of himself that he helped the British Conservatives “come to their senses” and in Boris Johnson to hoist a politician with a clear pro-Brexit agenda into the office of Prime Minister.

His plan worked, Farage has to be allowed to do that, even though the result of the tough Brexit negotiations with the EU did not appeal to him: “The result has de facto cut Northern Ireland off from the rest of the United Kingdom – and our fishermen are also suffering. But we’re out and there’s no going back, ”he said in a statement.

But at the core he sees confirmation: “We can already see from the example of the corona vaccines what advantage Brexit offers us. The EU has degenerated into a laughing stock ”, so Farage’s harsh judgment.

The militant politician will not completely disappear from the minds of the people, on the contrary. According to Reuters, Farage plans to use social media to influence public opinion more in the future. That can be something.
