Beer Internet sales during Covid-19 have gained popularity, Pēteris Liniņš, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Brewers’ Union (LADS), told LETA.

“A couple of years ago, if someone told me that someone would order and buy beer online, I would not want to believe it,” said Linins, acknowledging that the beer industry as a whole has always been conservative.

He noted that at the same time, even before the pandemic, the beer industry, together with other industries, advocated allowing internet trade, as it is practiced both in Latvia’s neighboring countries in the Baltics and in other European Union (EU) countries. However, with the onset of the pandemic, the online trading process was accelerated.

“No one before could have imagined that this would be the way the beer trade would gain such popularity. I think it would have happened without the pandemic, because the trend to buy food online was already before the pandemic. Now, overall, it has become commonplace. Consumers are used to it, “Liniņš commented.

Asked whether the tendency to buy products online will continue after the pandemic, Liniņš pointed out that, in his opinion, people will be accustomed to buying not only industrial goods, but also food products, thus the sale of beer online will continue.

“But, as I said, our industry is quite conservative, and the consumer is also conservative. When the pandemic ends, I hope people will be longing to be able to choose goods from the store shelf instead of online,” the chairman added.
