Milwaukee. Venezuelans Jackson Chourio and William Contreras homered in the first inning and scored again in the eighth as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Thursday.
Devin Williams earned his third save in as many opportunities and finished the game by striking out Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani.
By winning both games, the Brewers split the four-game series between the division leaders.
The Brewers trailed 4-3 when they loaded the bases to start the eighth on Chourio’s double, Garrett Mitchell walked and Contreras singled into the infield that went off the leg of reliever Daniel Hudson (6-2).
Willy Adames singled home Chourio’s tying run. Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernández dove to left field on Tyler Black’s grounder, but didn’t have time to throw home.
Instead he threw to first and Mitchell scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice.
For the Dodgers, Dominican Teoscar Hernandez went 1-for-4. Venezuelan Miguel Rojas went 1-for-4 with one run scored. Puerto Rican Kiké Hernandez went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Cuban Andy Pagés went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
For the Brewers, Venezuelans Jackson Chourio went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, William Contreras went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Dominican Willy Adames went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Orioles defeat Boston 5-1
Meanwhile, Zach Eflin pitched an impressive six innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1, who were counting on Mexican Jarren Duran, who was suspended for two games without pay last Monday after shouting a homophobic slur at a fan during Sunday’s game.
Gunnar Henderson and Cedric Mullins each homered to back Eflin (9-7), who has won all four of his starts since the Orioles acquired him from Tampa Bay before the trade deadline.
Eflin allowed one run and five hits in a performance that included a career-high eight strikeouts. He did not issue a single walk.
Baltimore has caught up with the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. Boston is eight games behind.
More results in the Major Leagues: Oakland 7-6 New York Mets, Detroit 2-1 Seattle, San Francisco 6-0 Atlanta, Philadelphia 13-3 Washington, and Minnesota 3-2 Texas.
