Břetislav Rychlík, who won 67.8 percent of the vote, will be a senator in the Brno-město constituency. He ran as an independent candidate and nominee of TOP 09, ODS, Greens and Pirates. In the second round of the senate elections, 13.29 percent of voters voted. The second Karin Podivinská (ANO), who ran for the SOCDEM and ANO coalition, received 32.19 percent of the vote. The current senator, Minister of Education Mikuláš Bek (for STAN) did not run this year.

“First of all, there is a need for elites to listen to groups of people who feel that no one is paying attention to them. They are very easy victims of populists who promise a lot. That populism is simply dangerous,” said Rychlík. In the Senate, he wants to focus on nature protection, education, culture and media freedom.

“We certainly cannot be inspired by Slovakia, where democratic institutions were subverted, criminals were released from prison only on the basis of some public prosecutor, the public media, the judiciary and the entire police were completely liquidated, or various anti-corruption measures were abolished. If we were to be inspired by someone, it would be the Baltic countries,” he added.

“However, I am also thinking about things that the senator cannot influence much, such as affordable housing or starter apartments for young people. And, of course, the protection of minorities and human rights,” said the newly elected senator.

In March of this year, Rychlík stated that he sees politics as a service to citizens, a clash of values based on the traditions of democracy and humanism. “In this sense, I believe that my work in politics would be a continuation of what I have been doing all my life. In November 1989, we were returning democratic values and principles to our country, and now it is clearly time to help again,” he said.

In the first round, Rychlík won 28.77 percent of the votes, Podivinská 23.66 percent of the votes. In the Brno-město district, seven candidates strove for the senatorial post this year. In 2018, Bek won in the city of Brno. He won 72.4 percent of the vote in the second round. Jaromír Ostrý (for ANO) finished second. At that time, 11 candidates took part in the elections.
