Brest, future French capital of culture?

He said to himself “Very optimistic” : for Reza Salami, Culture Assistant of Brest, there is no doubt that the city of Ponant has every chance of becoming the first French capital of culture.

The City is preparing to submit its application for this brand new label, created to offer an alternative to that, ” too expensive “, capital of european culture.

Reserved for municipalities of 20,000 to 200,000 inhabitants, this title will be awarded for the first time in 2022. At stake: one million euros (allocated by the State and the Caisse des Dépôts) and a welcome spotlight on cultural actions carried out.

Maritime city open to the world

If the details of the application file have not been disclosed, in order not to give too many clues to its competitors, the metropolis of Finistère intends first of all to highlight its maritime character, and “Openness to the whole world that the latter offers him.

The history of the city, destroyed then rebuilt, will also be highlighted. “To our knowledge, we will be the only town in Brittany”, says Reza Salami.

In March, ten municipalities will be shortlisted and will come to defend their project before a jury. It is at the end of this stage that the very first city will be announced to bear the label of French capital of culture during the year 2022.
